Old Fashioned, a 1969 Bertram 31, is Cooley Marine’s foray into the world of resto-mods. This was not the intent when the project started but shortly after her arrival it became apparent that we were taking this boat down to the stringers and starting over. With that in mind, we began an intensive design and development phase that allowed Cooley Marine to collaborate with the vessel’s owner and lay the foundation for what would ultimately become the most unique Bertram 31 the world has seen.
Zero corners were cut in this total restoration. The boat was stripped to the stringers and the process began with the complete renewal of the hull and structural members using modern boatbuilding composite with epoxy resins. Old Fashioned was modernized with all new electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, which included the addition of HVAC, generator, and LED lighting. Old Fashioned is powered by twin Nanni T4 270HP diesel engines with ZF 68A transmissions with new stainless shafts, struts and 4 blade Nibral propellors.
The interior space was redesigned to allow for a lower helm, galley, and head with shower comfortably on the starboard side. We pushed up the ceiling height in the main salon creating an open spacious feeling of a much larger yacht. Wrapped in laminated blue reflective glass the windshield is by far the most transformative aspect of the build and what truly sets Old Fashioned apart from any other Bertram 31 on the water. Other distinctions include custom stainless work, Magic Glass head enclosure, Permateak interior flooring, white oak countertops and aft bench seating/ storage. The boat is painted inside and out using AlexSeal premium marine topcoats by our superior in-house paint team. She is capped off by a one-of-a-kind hand-painted faux-teak transom and flybridge helm pod.
Old Fashioned is truly a classic and we are so proud to share her with the world. If you would like to learn more about Cooley Marine Restorations or have a project idea in mind please click here.
